Sybil A. Thompson

"To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die." This quote from British poet Thomas Campbell is a fitting tribute to Sybil Alice Cook Thompson who passed peacefully to Heaven on June 5, 2022 at Circle of Life Hospice in Springdale, AR. She had fulfilled her last wish to reach her 97th birthday, which was six days earlier on Memorial Day, May 30.

Sybil lived a long and full life, and her influence touched many people, both family and friends. Born in Union County, Arkansas on May 30, 1925, she was the oldest child of Benjamin Alexander Cook and Stella Mae Dean Cook. She is survived by her sister Irene Cook Hunter of Fayetteville, AR.

Preceding her in death were her husband David Allen Thompson and her son David Henry Thompson, both formerly of Kinder, LA. She is also survived by her granddaughters Misti Lynn Thompson of Leesburg, VA and Kristi Lee Thompson, significant other William Elmer Dugger the 4th, of West Lake, LA. Additional family members include her daughter-in-law Cheryl Duhon Williams and Corey Adam Allemand and Jackie of West Lake, LA, as well as her sister-in-law Bobby Thompson Mann of Houston, TX. Other survivors include her nieces Faune Cook Conner & Bill of Fayetteville, AR; Lori Hunter Marks & Tim of Fayetteville, AR; Mary Pat Anthony & Aubra of El Dorado, AR; nephews James Freddie Hunter of Camden, AR and Robert Michael Cook & Carolyn of El Dorado, AR; great nieces Kaylee Elizabeth Cook of El Dorado, AR; Jennifer Conner Baugh & Justin of Fayetteville, AR and Amber Leigh Marks of Fayetteville, AR and great nephew Eric Andrew Marks of Texarkana, AR. Great great nieces include Aubry Sloan Marks of Fayetteville, AR and Emerson Mae Marks of Texarkana, AR.

Sybil was a graduate of El Dorado High School in South Arkansas and then graduated from the Warner Brown School of Nursing in El Dorado during World War II. The nursing school was taught by The Sisters of Mercy Catholic nuns and Sybil often recalled that the training was strict and rigorous. She began her career as a registered nurse as a private duty nurse in Magnolia, AR. Later, after marriage, she and her family lived in Summerfield, LA for a few years before transferring with Hunt Oil Company to Crane, TX. Those years were among her happiest she often recalled. Hunt later transferred her family to Kinder, LA where she became the administrator of Allen Parish Hospital for a long and faithful 25 years. After retirement at age 75 she began a second career cooking once a week for the local Rotary Club with all the proceeds going to her church. Cooking was always her passion, and she continued that voluntary job until she was 85. Her work ethic was strong, and she encouraged that in her grandchildren as well. She also took great pride in her appearance and in any job, she was tasked to do. She had an eye for beauty and was a china painter and a quilter in her spare time. Always willing to contribute, many of the local cookbooks in the Kinder, LA area contain her recipes. Sybil spent the last two years of her life in Fayetteville, AR happily traveling, reading, and enjoying new friends.
