Obituary

On January 16, 1951, Norma "Jean" Johnson Popillion was born in Eunice, Louisiana to the late Rose Johnson Moses Victorian and Austin Fontenot. She departed this earthy world in the early morning hours on June 14, 2026, at St. Francis Nursing Home in Oberlin, Louisiana.

Jean Johnson married the love of her life, Joseph David Popillion, on June 23, 1973. Together, they built a beautiful life centered on love and family and were blessed with four daughters: Ramona "Gail". Farrah, Heather, and Hannah.

At a young age Jean became a believer in Christ. On May 13, 1961, at the age of 10, she was baptized at Assumption Catholic Church in Basile, Louisiana. On October 27, 1964, at the age of 13, she made her confirmation at Annunciation Catholic Church in Durald, Louisiana. Jean was also a devoted member of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Kinder, Louisiana for many years. Later on in her life she became an active member of True Faith Pentecostal Church in Oberlin, Louisiana.

Jean worked for Kinder Retirement & Rehab Center for multiple decades. She left for a short period of time to work at Allen Parish Hospital, before returning to the Kinder Retirement & Rehab Center for another decade.

Jean was a very outspoken, independent, and true hard worker. She enjoyed zydeco, blues, and country music, and loved to zydeco. Her favorite movie was Urban Cowboy; she even visited where it was filmed in Pasadena, Texas. She enjoyed drinking coffee early in the morning while watching the news and had a love for cooking and adding lots of seasoning to her meals especially red pepper. She enjoyed chocolate-covered cherries, and in the summer, you could find her under the carport snapping fresh peas.

She leaves to cherish her memories of seventy-five years, her children; Gail (Eric) Cole of Oberlin, Louisiana, Farrah Popillion, Heather (Jewery) Webb, and one son-in-law, Dewayne Simmons, all of Lake Charles, Louisiana. Her two brothers, Arthur (Freddie) Moses of New Orleans, Louisiana and Bob Moses of Houston, Texas. One step-brother, Joseph "Joe Boy" Victorian Jr. of Basile, Louisiana. Her sisters, Rita Moses of Basile, Louisiana, Ruthie Mae Radcliff of Columbia, Missouri, and Florence LaRue of Eunice, Louisiana. Her grandkids, Chelesea (HD) Martin, Marquis Popillion, Ciara Cole, Tanika (companion: Roddriq Burns) Durgan, Tajanae Ardoin, Tejah Ardoin, Traevon Jackson, Tayshan Ardoin, Patrice Webb, Isaiah Jackson, Nevaeh Jackson, Amberlyn Simmons, and Emeric Simmons. Her thirteen great-grandkids and a God-daughter, Ella Rose "Tiny" Prudhomme. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will always remember her fondly.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Rose Johnson Victorian and Austin Fontenot; her daughter, Hannah Simmons; her brothers, Lawrence Moses, Clarence Moses, and JB Fontenot; her sisters, Betty LaFleur, Edna Moses, and Irene Carriere; her two grandkids, Grayson Deshawn Ardoin and Reagan Popillion; seven step-sisters; and one God-son, Raylin Popillion Sr.
