Obituary

Murray Fontenot, a lifelong educator, coach, and cherished member of the Kinder community, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2026, at the age of 83.

For many years, Murray devoted his life to teaching sixth grade, at Kinder, where he shaped generations of students not only academically, but through his steady example of kindness, discipline, and integrity. In addition to the classroom, he shared his love of the game as a basketball, football, and track coach, mentoring young athletes and instilling in them the values of teamwork, perseverance, and respect.

Outside of school, Murray found great joy in gardening. He took pride in his harvest and was known for generously sharing fresh vegetables with neighbors, friends, and anyone who stopped by. This quiet act of giving reflected who he was at heart-thoughtful, humble, and always mindful of others.

Murray's impact on Kinder reached far beyond school walls. In a message to the community, Mayor Lafargue reflected on his legacy, noting that Murray "likely taught generations of Kinder residents and left a lasting impact on countless lives." His dedication, character, and service to the community will not be forgotten.

He is survived by his loving sisters, Adele Unkel (Mike), Vernell Chaney (Swep), and Jenna Wainwright; along with many nieces and nephews who will forever cherish his guidance, stories, and unwavering presence.

Murray was preceded in death by his parents, Frances and Murry Fontenot; his brother, Kendall Fontenot; his sister, Jean Riley; his nephew, Bradley Fontenot; and brother-in-law, Bert Wainwright.
