Melvin Foster III, born December 23, 1966, passed away on March 21, 2026, in Houston, Texas at the age of 59. Melvin was a native Houstonian who loved his hometown. Melvin was also a devoted Christian father who cherished his children, grandchildren, and extended family. He loved baking and barbecuing, filling his home with warmth and delicious food. The best part was he always shared his creations with everyone around him -- he was a giving man with a big heart.
Melvin proudly served as a Harris County Deputy Sheriffs Officer and Field Training Officer for 15 years, earning the respect of his colleagues for his professionalism and motivation. His dedication to public service left a lasting impact on the community and the deputies he trained. His absence will undoubtedly be felt throughout his district.
Outside of his career, Melvin was an accomplished and accredited athlete. He played on 3rd Ward's Jack Yates football team, winning the 1985 State Football Championship. After being named one of the top recruits out of Texas, he signed with the University of Iowa Hawkeyes in 1986 and was a member of the 1990 team that secured a Big Ten championship and a Rose Bowl berth; he later went on to play with the Dallas Cowboys. Melvin's football legacy was honored by induction into the 2021 first inaugural class of the Houston ISD Hall of Honors, a testament to his remarkable athletic achievements.
Melvin's legacy continues on in the lives he touched, both as a loving family man and as a mentor in his professional and athletic endeavors. He truly gave his heart and love to everyone he met with no questions asked. Melvin's memory will be forever cherished by his family, friends, fellow officers, those he helped during his time of service, and all who knew him.
He is survived by his loving wife, Michèle Foster; his mother Evelyn; his children Michael A. Foster, Morgan A. Foster, Marcus A. Foster and wife Miranda, Tatjana A. Simmons and Eliana H. Simmons; his 9 grandchildren; his siblings Vanessa Johnson and husband Jack, Kelvin Foster and Wife Stacey, and Kwantessa Chambers and Wife LaQuita "Q"; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, friends and family.
Melvin will forever be celebrated for his bravery, humility, hard work, generosity, warmth, and love. Melvin will always be loved and never forgotten.
