The Life and Ministry of Bro. Poe

Rev. L.G. Poe was born April 5, 1943, and passed away March 30, 2025, at the age of 81.

On May 5, 1962, Bro. Poe married Patricia in Port Lavaca, Texas, where he worked for a tugboat company as a crew member. Their union was blessed with the birth of their first daughter, Wyvette, a year later. The family attended the United Pentecostal Church of Port Lavaca, led by Rev. B. E. Moore.

When Rev. Moore moved to Cleburne, Texas to take on a new pastoral position, Bro. Poe and his family followed suit. In Cleburne, he immersed himself in various ministry roles, particularly within the Sunday School department. It was during this time that their second daughter, Lori, was born.

He felt his call to the ministry and was licensed by the United Pentecostal Church International, eventually becoming an ordained minister. Around this period, their third daughter, Dorothy, was born.

Bro. Poe's ministry led him to serve in different churches, helping establish growth and revival. He began with his first pastorate as founding pastor of UPC of Bridgeport Texas. Other churches he pastored includes Manor, Cuero, Seminole, Hereford and Electra Texas, and one in Buffalo Missouri. His final and longest pastorate was in Vernon Texas where he retired after over 15 years of service.

Bro. Poe was known for his handyman skills, earning the title "Jack of all Trades." He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and engaging in lengthy conversations. He was known affectionately as "dad" and "pawpaw" to his immediate family, LG to his siblings and many others who adopted him as dad or pawpaw.

Telling stories, cracking jokes, and pulling pranks are a few of the many things he was well known for. When his girls were young, he was known in their neighborhoods as the "fun dad on the block".

He truly loved the Lord, was a brave and bold soldier of the cross, and left a legacy of faith and many memories for his family and the multitude of all who knew him to cherish. Even in his final days on this earth, he could be heard preaching the word from his room in the nursing home.

Though he is no longer with us, his spirit lives on in the stories we tell, the laughter we share, and the good deeds we continue in his memory.
Today, we celebrate the man, the myth, the legend...the one and only Rev. L. G. Poe!
