Obituary

James Earl Hickman was born December 23, 1961, and passed away October 24, 2025, at the age of 63.

Back in his day, James was known as one of the best in the arena, fearless, strong, and respected by everyone who had the honor of watching him ride. His legacy in the world of bull riding will live on, not only in the records he set but in the hearts of those who admired his grit and determination.

Beyond the rodeo lights, James built a full and beautiful life. As a master plumber for many years, his hard work and skill served countless families and businesses. But his proudest titles were husband, dad, and Papa. He never missed a softball or baseball game, cheering louder than anyone, and his love for his children and grandchildren was unmatched. He lived for them, always ready with a smile, a story, or a helping hand.

James shared a lifetime of love and laughter with his soulmate, Shelly. Together, they made countless memories, especially their trips to Louisiana, where they'd try their luck at the slots and enjoy each other's company. Their bond was one for the ages.

He was his daughter's best friend, and his guidance and humor will forever echo in her heart. He also passed down his love for bull riding to his son-in-law, introducing him to the world of judging and sharing that passion right up until the end. The time they spent together in his final days was a reflection of the deep respect and love he inspired in everyone who knew him.
James leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cowboy grit, a man who lived fully, loved deeply, and rode fearlessly.

He is survived by his children, Chelsea Frances and husband Donald, and Justin Earl Hickman; grandchildren, Dalton, Sadie, Haiden, Gunner; and cousin, Cheyenne Hickman Bourgeois.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Shelly Hickman; parents, William and Matti Hickman; brother, Willie Hickman; and grandchild, Payden.

Cremation was entrusted to Dorman-Riley Smith & Sons Funeral Home, 8808 Highway 87 North Orange, Texas.
