E.J. "Skip"
Scroggins Iii
Jul 31, 1946 — Dec 16, 2024
Elva Joseph "Skip" Scroggins III, 78, recently passed away while in San Felipe Mexico. A private graveside service will be held at Kinder McRill Cemetery under the direction of Riley Smith Funeral Home in Kinder LA.
Skip was born on July 31, 1946, in Baton Rouge LA to Elva Joseph and Coralie Gidlow Scroggins. He graduated from Catholic High School in New Iberia LA in 1964 and then moved to Taos NM. He resided in Las Vegas NV for a number of years and then settled in the Taos and Albuquerque areas. He made a name for himself at "Cowboys and Indians Antiques" of Albuquerque as a salesperson, but more importantly as a knowledgeable source of information about authentic "Old West" history, art, and Native American artifacts. Skip purchased a home on the Baja Peninsula of Mexico where he divided his time between San Felipe for winters and Albuquerque for summers. He was part of a community who appreciated Skip's ability to be a quick-witted conversationalist, his compassion for those in the men's shelters, and his caring giving nature. Those friends include Gwyn and Mike Higbee, their daughter Alexis Higbee, Janine Fentamine, Terry Schurmeier, and his special neighbor Kathy Smith. Numerous other friends within that community will also miss his company.
A devoted fan of the New Orleans Saints football team, Skip often faced challenges catching games while living in Mexico and New Mexico. Despite being far from Louisiana, he maintained a connection to his roots with traditions like enjoying biscuits and gravy after local swap meets and bidding farewell with his signature phrase: "See y'all later."
Skip was preceded in death by his parents Elva Joseph and Coralie Gidlow Scroggins; by his brothers Curtis Ray Scroggins, Thomas Orville Scroggins, and Robert James Scroggins; and brother-in-law Phillip Morris. Skip is survived by brothers Bill Scroggins (Kay) of Tyler TX and Jerome Scroggins (DeDe) of Church Point LA. He is also survived by his sister Fran Morris of Converse LA and sisters-in-law Carol Polito of Lafayette LA and Linda Scroggins of New Orleans. Ten nieces and nephews remain to remember Skip.
The family wishes to express gratitude to the dear friends who kept Skip within their community for so long, and showed him gentle and concerned care. May his memory bring a smile to all who knew him. The family also suggests that, if so inclined, a donation in Skip's name to a local men's shelter or other charity would certainly be appreciated by that organization.
