Bishop Doyle
Douglas Davis Sr.
Nov 14, 1932 — Jan 23, 2025
Doyle Douglas Davis was born in Newton County Texas on November 14, 1932, the son of Cecil S. Davis (a Pentecostal minister) and Eva Herrin Davis. He excelled at sports and music and made a number of musical recordings with his brother and father in his teen years. He acknowledged a call to spiritual ministry early in life and at age 17, began to travel as an evangelist. In 1950, at the age of 18, he received ministerial license with the United Pentecostal Church, International and was ordained 7 years later, in 1957.
D. D. Davis married Betty Joyce Bond of Haynesville, Louisiana on September 3, 1951. He and his wife, Betty, became the parents of three sons: Douglas Jr., who is the Bishop of Bethel United Pentecostal Church in Old Westbury, NY; Dan Eugene, who is Senior Pastor of First United Pentecostal Church of Baton Rouge, LA; and Curtis Wendell, who is Director of Christian Education and Data Operations Manager of Bethel UPC in Old Westbury, NY.
In 1951 D. D. Davis, along with his brother, Cecil, founded a church in Henderson, Texas. He ministered there for 2 years, successfully building the congregation. Following this, Rev. Davis became an Assistant Minister at Calvary Tabernacle in South Bend, Indiana. He served in this capacity for five years, during which time, his musical expertise as a singer, musician, and choir director became widely known.
In 1958, D. D. Davis founded Calvary Pentecostal Church in Fort Worth, Texas. Over the next ten years, the congregation increased rapidly and outgrew three successive buildings. During this time, he also served as a presbyter of the Texas District UPCI. He and his musical groups continued to travel extensively throughout the country to sing and perform and he recorded several long-play albums with artists such as Murrell and Joan Ewing, and Vesta Mangun.
Feeling a call to establish a church in New York, Pastor Davis moved his family from Texas to Long Island on July 1, 1968. This congregation also grew rapidly, outgrowing 4 buildings. Today, Bethel United Pentecostal Church of Old Westbury maintains a beautiful and spacious 20-acre facility, serving the more than 1000 individuals who consider Bethel to be their spiritual home.
Over the ensuing years, D. D. Davis ministered in numerous district and national positions of the United Pentecostal Church, International. He served as District Superintendent of the New York State District, Global Missions Director of the New York Metro District, Executive Presbyter of the Northeast Region, Presbyter of the New York District, Chairman of the Board of Kent Christian College, and he was a member of the Ministers Appeal Council. In 1986 he became a member of the UPCI Global Missions Board and continued to serve in that capacity for 39 years until his death.
On September 30, 2013, Bishop Davis received the highest honor bestowed by the UPCI as General Superintendent Dr. David K. Bernard officially inducted him into the "Order of the Faith." In 2025 Bishop Davis received a special commendation acknowledging his 75 years of service to the United Pentecostal Church, International, an accomplishment achieved by only one other licensed minister of the UPCI.
Bishop Davis was called to his eternal reward on Thursday, January 23, 2025. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Betty Joyce Davis; son, Doug Davis Jr.; son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Sandi Davis; son and daughter-in-law, Curt and Ginny Davis; 4 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
